DoD 5520.22-M,

the most prevalent standard for cleaning a hard drive.

Wipe the hard drive clean with up to seven disk erase passes that over-write with varied data, including a low-level format for complete sterilisation, and we use a test utility to make sure we’ve really wiped that drive clean.

Don’t dispose of an old hard drive that still might contain confidential information, such as credit card and social security numbers, legal, financial or medical information, or any other data that you would prefer to keep private.
